Section 4 Dominance of Buddhism and Jainism
4.2 Buddhist and Jain Scholars
After the time of Ashoka, Buddhism and Jainism were firmly established in Andhra and Karnataka. But it took a long time for them to become popular in Tamil Nadu. Major rulers of Tamil Nadu do not seem to have embraced these religions and this may have been one of the reasons for this situation. With the coming of the Kalabhras, who are known to have supported Buddhism, this situation began to change. There were Buddhists and Jains among the Pallava rulers. Some Pandya rulers may also be said to have patronized Jainism.
